Born to it - LIVE!

We’d like this to be our organic page where you can email us at live@borntoit.com with pictures and stories of you and the great outdoors. Perhaps you have something you want to get off your chest (we reserve the right to edit!) or tell us about an event that you’re going to, have taken part in or are organising.

Our Live page needs to be entertaining as well as informative (so jokes and funny stories are fine too).
In fact, photos showing somebody wearing a 2008 ‘Born to Explore’ t-shirt will be entered in our competition to be judged at the end of the Autumn season. The winning photo will be the one showing our clothing in either the remotest, most extreme or just the funniest situation and will win the sender £100 - just in time for Christmas!

So come on, send us your advice and tips, news and views to live@borntoit.com. Our email of the month wins a pair of our new high performance ‘Born to Hike’ socks too!

Born To It Spotlight
We at Born to It recently had the pleasure of spending some time with Neil Roden, member of Edale Mountain Rescue and founder member of Basecamp
Neil took time to show us first-hand the work of Mountain Rescue as well as the history and geography of living in the heart of the Peak District. Neil’s ability to impart his enthusiasm and immense knowledge of the ‘great outdoors’ in such a modest way was a huge inspiration. During our time with Neil we learned a great deal about the Peak District as well as the work of Mountain Rescue.

There are 61 teams with 3,500 team members covering England and Wales and 12 teams with 450 team members covering the Lake District
Team members, both men and women, are on call 24 hrs a day, 365 days a year, all working on a voluntary basis. Training and rescuing demands a very high commitment as well as tremendous support and understanding from partners, wives, husbands, family and employers.

Neil Roden
Teams are charities with hardly any external funding and each one needs to raise around £30,000 to £70,000 each year to keep going - funding comes from donations and fundraising activities. A typical rescue may involve up to 20 team members for around 6 hours on average. Rescues are split 75% / 25% between trauma & medical / searches. Helicopters do assist, but are only called for a relatively small percentage of rescues where urgent air support is required and weather conditions allow. There are over 700 rescues each year with over half of these in the Lake District.
At the end of our visit Neil commented that it would be unlikely for any weekend to pass without a call-out and sure enough on the Saturday night the team were called to Millstone Edge in a rescue that involved a helicopter evacuation.

It seemed extraordinary to us that they were dependent on fund raising and donations alone. To that end a new national supporters group for Mountain Rescue has been formed called Basecamp
Neil Roden is one of the Founder members. As he said "some people aren't aware of what Mountain Rescue do until they need them...."
Let's not be one of those people.

Please, please support them in any way that you can, perhaps subscribe to the quarterly magazine?
