Bamboo is such a strong fibre it will last and last. It grows up to 18 inches a day and is 100% sustainable. It doesn’t need chemicals or pesticides to grow and is 100% biodegradable.
When we refer to the ‘carbon footprint’ we tend to think about the over use of transport, ie cars, aeroplanes , excessive consumption of energy and natural resources. But our clothes consumption is also leaving a ‘carbon footprint’.
Why should we care about what we wear?
The reasons for caring about what we wear go far beyond fashion, looking good and feeling good. We all like to feel good about what we are wearing but a lot of the material used to produce these clothes uses conventional farming methods. These methods are having a damaging effect on the environment, the earth’s resources, humans and other living creatures.
Did you know that artificial fertilizers and genetically modified seeds are frequently used to promote the rapid growth of cotton? Seeds are typically treated with fungicides or insecticides. In fact conventionally grown cotton consumes approximately 25% of the world’s insecticides and 10% of pesticides. Herbicides are applied to the soil to inhibit weed germination and then they are repeatedly used throughout the growing process to kill weeds. Then when the cotton has grown, toxic dyes are used to colour it and formaldehyde is used to prevent creasing.
Nine of the most common pesticides are highly toxic and some are probable carcinogens. Aerial crop spraying presents a huge hazard with potential drift onto farm workers and neighbouring wildlife.
Cotton seed is used in livestock feed and in some snacks we eat. These chemicals are on our clothes, on our sheets and in our towels.
There is a real danger that the manufacture of the clothing we wear to go on our adventure is damaging the very environment we want to enjoy.
We don’t expect to change things overnight but the next time you step outdoors what footprint will you leave?
